PROTECTION AND SOCKS
Kids' MTB Protection and Socks: Youth Pads by Fox
This category brings together protection and socks for young mountain bikers – knee guards, elbow guards, upper-body protection and riding socks cut and sized for children and teenagers. Everything here is part of the children's mountain bike collection at Foxracing.si, so young riders can be kitted out for trail rides, bike park laps and their first races without wearing oversized adult gear.
What this category covers
- Youth knee guards – the most-used piece of protection on a mountain bike, covering the kneecap and often part of the shin for trail riding, enduro and bike park sessions.
- Youth elbow guards – light sleeve-style or hard-shell guards that protect the elbow and forearm in low-speed tip-overs.
- Upper-body and chest protection – protection jackets and chest protectors that add coverage over the chest, back and shoulders for downhill and gravity riding.
- MTB socks – crew-height cycling socks in breathable knit fabrics that reduce rubbing inside shoes and work under or over knee guards.
How to choose protection for a child
- Measure, don't guess. Youth guards are sized by the circumference of the thigh or calf just above and below the knee (or around the bicep for elbow guards). Compare those measurements to the size chart rather than buying by age alone.
- Fit above all. A pad should stay centred on the joint when the child pedals and squats. Too loose and it slides down mid-run; too tight and it restricts the knee and gets left at home.
- Soft shell or hard shell. Flexible foam pads that stiffen on impact are comfortable for long trail rides and pedalling. Hard-shell guards slide better on gravel and suit bike park and downhill use.
- Certification. Limb protectors are tested to EN 1621-1; Level 1 means lower transmitted force in the test, Level 2 more. Chest and back protectors follow their own standards.
- Ventilation. Mesh backing, perforated foam and moisture-wicking liners make a big difference to whether a child keeps the pads on in summer.
- Grip and closure. Silicone grippers, adjustable straps or a stretch sleeve keep guards in place; adjustable straps also give a little room to grow.
- Socks matter. Choose a crew height that reaches above the shoe cuff and, ideally, above the top of the knee guard, in a synthetic or blended knit that dries quickly.

Frequently asked questions
Do children really need knee pads for mountain biking?
Knees and elbows take the first hit in almost every low-speed fall, so knee guards are the single most useful piece of protection after a helmet, especially on rocky trails and in bike parks.
How should youth knee guards fit?
The pad should sit centred over the kneecap with the child standing, stay there through a deep squat, and feel snug without pinching behind the knee or cutting off circulation.
Can my child wear adult size XS instead of a youth size?
Youth guards are shaped for shorter, narrower limbs, so they usually stay in place far better than the smallest adult size, which tends to slide down.
Should socks go over or under knee guards?
Either works: socks under the guard reduce rubbing on the calf, while a tall sock pulled over the lower cuff helps stop the pad creeping down.
How do I wash protection and socks?
Follow the care label – usually a cool, gentle wash with straps fastened and air drying away from direct heat, which protects the foam and elastic.
